Help... [15 Jan 2006|12:57pm]
[ mood | confused ]

Ok, so my room mates and I are going crazy because we can't figure out who sings the song:

"Ooooh, you know how we do, you know how we do, you know how we do, this is how we do..."

For God's sake, someone help us. We can't get off it...

Slow Fridays [13 Jan 2006|03:57pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

Meh - so I'm bored, and I took this from [info]unappropriate.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't search around and look for the coolest book you can find. Do what's actually next to you.

"International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers - The shortened form Machinists union is acceptable in all references."

The nearest book to me was actually Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style: Fourth Edition," but it only has 105 pages. The book next to it, which the sentence is pulled from, is the Associated Press Stylebook 2004. My bible.

In other news, I'm going to a pretty damned cool conference next week - WOMBAT: Word-of-Mouth Basic Training.

By the way - please donate! See below if you've forgotten already.

That is all.

No, This Is NOT For Community Service [11 Jan 2006|02:49pm]
I may have e-mailed some of you with this already, but I'm begging everywhere...

Happy new year to those of you I haven't yet seen or spoken with. I'm writing because on March 4th I'll be walking in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk here in Orlando, and I'm setting out to raise some money for this event.

So, here's what I'm asking of my friends, enemies, co-workers, family members, clients, contacts, and people I meet on the street...

Sponsor me!

Please, that is.

The goal that I've set on my pledge site is $500, but I'm sure I can far surpass that with the number of people that I know.

Basically if everyone who reads this gives $5 or so, we're more than set. No matter what you donate, believe me, it's still something. The website will just show that you've donated, not how much, so don't worry if it's just a few bucks - give what you can.

And - just think how good you'll feel knowing you've helped a great cause, as well as the satisfaction of knowing you've played a part in making me wake up at dawn on a Saturday morning.

It's very easy to donate - conveniently, JDRF has set up a website for me to take donations directly, so you don't have to dig around for cash or worry that I'll run off to Mexico. The event is set up as fixed donation, so there's no "by the mile," or anything like that. You can donate and track what I've raised at the following address:

http://walk.jdrf.org/walker.cfm?id=86321223

Thank you!!

-John
From Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Our goal: To raise $86 million to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating, often deadly disease that affects millions of people--a large and growing percentage of them children.

Many people think type 1 diabetes can be controlled by insulin. While insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type 1 diabetes, there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease.

That's the bad news... and yes, it's pretty bad.

The good news, though, is that a cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. And JDRF funds a major portion of all type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity.

Visit http://jdrf.org/ for more information.

Cookie Monster [05 Jan 2006|04:48pm]
Our culinary team just brough over a freshly-baked chocolate chip cookie with a diameter of roughly 2.5 feet.

They did this because they needed us to approve it before moving forward with further production for an event we're putting together.

In other companies, approvals usually consist of a piece of paper shoved under the nose of a boss.

My ten years in this industry have done nothing at all to prepare me for an eventual transition to the "real" world.

Some cute quotes from the last two days in NYC...

Take Two [27 Dec 2005|05:53pm]
The St. Pete Times just can't get enough of me...
That old-time religion

An Orthodox Jewish movement keeps centuries-old traditions alive in Palm Harbor and gives even casual observers a reason to head to Universal Studios on Sunday.

By NICOLE JOHNSON
Published December 24, 2005

...It is this spirit of accessibility that led Universal Studios organizers to approach the group about helping to organize the park's first ever Hanukkah celebration.

On Sunday, the park will host "A Universal Chanukah" at Universal's City Walk in Orlando. There will be an 18-foot menorah lighting, kosher food and music.

"The congregation was looking for a place for the Jewish community to come enjoy themselves for the holidays," Universal Orlando spokesman John Martz said. "Universal seemed like the perfect place to do it."...

I Ain't No Challah Back Girl [21 Dec 2005|10:20am]
I was in the kitchen at work today washing out my Starbucks mug when the Advertising Director's assistant walked in.

She's a lovely woman from Trinidad, so you can imagine the cheery sing-song quality of her voice as she speaks.

JEWELL: Happy holidays John!

JOHN: Thanks, you as well.

JEWELL: Now, are you the Jewish one? You celebrate the Hanukkah, yes?

JOHN: Er, well, my family is mixed, so I've celebrated both, yes.

JEWELL: I thought so! I was going to get you a card, but then thought I didn't know what to get - a Jewish card? And I thought you were the Jewish one amongst us, because someone had a Hanukkah question the other day and they said - "Go ask John, he'll know."

JOHN: Right, well, yes. That's me.

I suppose that in the correct context a conversation such as this would be offensive, but the woman is just so sweet and oblivious that it's impossible to fault her for anything. Especially since she ended the conversation by trying to empty a Wet-Nap packet into her coffee.

"There's no sugar in this..." she said.

This is the woman whom I let call me "Mark" for months because she thought it was my name, despite the fact that I have a rather large nametag on my lanyard that clearly reads "JOHN," so I thought it was amusing more than anything else, especially seeing as how I don't really associate with either of my family's religious beliefs.

In other news, to all of my theater friends out there - especially the dancers - there's a great article in today's New York Times on whether or not a college education is necessary for aspects of the performing arts world.

Check it out here.

The sidebar in the article also lists out the first three parts of the "Making Artists" series, which highlights the training of artists in a variety of professions. You'll need to register, but it's free, and they don't send you any e-mail crap.

Also, I went to see Gwen Stefani last night. She put on a good show, especially given the fact that she's newly pregnant. Admittedly, I know basically none of her post-No Doubt music, but I recognized the Banana song (so THAT'S what b-a-n-a-n-a-s means!) and the one that sounds like Fiddler on the Roof.

The girls smiled their way to exponentially better seats than we'd paid for, getting us an unfettered balcony view of the stage. Still a distance from the stage, but the view was ideal. They said it was because the TD Waterhouse employee thought they were hot, but I maintain that he mistook Kristian for a wayward Harajuku girl and took pity.

Oh, and...programming the new phone is a pain in the ass, so if you have the new number, please just call me and don't be offended if I'm unsure who it is off the bat. We're in a society where we're at the will of our phone books, and connecting ten numbers with a name withougt digital assistance is far too difficult for me.

Hanukkah event set for Universal

By SCOTT BARANCIK, Times Staff Writer
Published December 19, 2005

What do Popeye, Olive Oyl, Woody Woodpecker and Curious George have in common? All four characters will help celebrate the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah this month at Universal Orlando.

Spokesman John Martz said the Dec. 25 event will be the first full-bore Hanukkah celebration in the resort's history. Two restaurants will serve food prepared according to Jewish dietary law. After an outdoor candle-lighting ceremony, Popeye and friends will lead participants on a march to the resort's main stage, where Israeli musicians will perform.

"We're still waiting on Scooby-Doo," said Rabbi Yosef Konikov, whose Chabad of South Orlando is one of two Orthodox Jewish groups cosponsoring the affair. He predicts at least 2,000 people will attend.

Konikov's work isn't over. To get the Thunder Falls and Cafe La Bamba restaurants ready to serve kosher food, he and others will come armed with such tools as blowtorches, which are used to purify food-preparation and cooking surfaces.

"Between me, the other rabbi and Batman," he said, "we're going to do it."

Let Us Give Thanks And Praise [02 Dec 2005|02:42am]
Tonight, everything clicked. My friends, the music, the drinks, the atmosphere, my balance.

Tonight was...very likely...the best night out I've had all year.

Special thanks to Nolan ([info]groovynsk), John([info]johnnyred83), Ed([info]educat_ed), Richard, Jenny, and Ben for making it so.

I smiled all the way home.

Quiet Mountain Town [13 Nov 2005|08:08pm]

(of course I was, since I'm procrastinating on a paper that's 45% of my semester grade)

...so I made my South Park character.

What do you think?

Enough, Already [03 Nov 2005|03:02pm]
This is going to be a rough month, I can tell, because Madonna's new CD isn't out for another two weeks...

...and I'm already way past being sick and tired of hearing about her and her fuchsia-clad spandexed self.

Between the album art, and the small portion of the video I saw, she's now slipped into the sad realm of Molly Shannon's "Sally O'Malley" character.

"I'm 50 years old! And I like to kick! And stretch! And KICK! I'm 50. Fifty years old! When I put on my red pants I like to dance!"

That's my two cents, so, go ahead - attack.

Hu-zzah [28 Oct 2005|04:26pm]
Well, I'm happy as a clam now - Death Cab For Cutie just added a second show at Hard Rock Live since the first one sold out so fast, and I've got a ticket.

Balcony center - I can't do the general admission area, I can't stand crowds and I'd end up backhanding some 12-year-old emo kid.

Anyhow, Hard Rock said there are still a lot of tickets left for the second show, so if you couldn't get the first night, you can probably get some now.

Going-Out-Of-Business-Sale! [28 Oct 2005|01:33pm]
This is very last-minute, but since apparently none of the local charities feel fit to call me back, I'm just going to give my remaining furniture to whomever wants to come take it away.

Free.

No hidden fees or charges.

Just show up, and take it.

The rub is it needs to be gone by Monday (10/31).

Here's what I have:

1 - 8-drawer dresser (real wood, maple finish), about 4' tall

1 - Full mattress & box spring set

1 - Desk (maple - I think it's part wood/part particle board)

1 - Book shelf, about 6'5"

Respond or call me (if you have my #), and I'll be happy to let you take any of these off my hands...

Mmm... [26 Oct 2005|03:41pm]

McDonald's selling off part of burrito company

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. has filed an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Denver, Colo.-based Mexican restaurant chain was founded in 1993 and now has 454 stores, including one in Tampa with more planned. Of those, 149 have opened since Jan. 1, 2004.

McDonald's Corp. (NYSE:MCD), based in Oak Brook, Ill., owns 92 percent of the chain, according to IPO documents and plans to sell a minority interest in the chain.

Chipotle turned profitable in 2004, earning $6.1 million on $468.6 million in revenue. For the first six months of 2005, earnings jumped to $28.4 million on revenue of $288.6 million.

Proceeds of the offering will be used to open new stores, maintain existing restaurants and repay an existing $30 million credit line with McDonald's, the filing said.

Chipotle applied to trade its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "CMG."

I Don't Get It... [25 Oct 2005|05:07pm]
[ mood | morose ]

In the course of 8 hours I've found out that a friend was assaulted late last night, as well as getting the news that another friend discovered his older brother's body after he committed suicide, leaving behind not only the brother and family, but a young daughter as well.

What is wrong with this world?

This is not a great day.
